On this day in 2020, Mrs. Vjosa Osmani was elected Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Kosova. Ms. Osmani was the first woman to be elected to this important public office, and in general, her work was evaluated with very positive marks. Based on the general parliamentary elections of 2019, as well as after the agreement of the governing coalition parties, the ambitious young lawyer was elected speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Kosova. She succeeded Glauk Konjufca, a member of the Self-Determination Movement. Her time as speaker of the parliament was characterized by an increase in credibility towards the institution, and also by strong debates with the opposition.
Ms. Osmani’s profile was growing in the Kosovar public, and now she was openly targeting the leadership of the Democratic League of Kosova party. Before becoming a deputy, Mrs. Osmani worked in the cabinet of President Fatmir Sejdiu. She speaks five foreign languages and holds a Doctor of Science degree. The election of Ms. Osmani as the head of the parliament of the Republic of Kosova was a clear indicator of the emancipation of women from Kosova. This is undoubtedly the result of the state-building efforts of more than two decades, enabling the inclusion of women in the public sphere and in decision-making as a very important process for the overall development of a society. The civil society evaluated it as an important social step that would serve as a role model and inspiration for the new generations with ambitions for the public sphere and politics.
