On this day in 2008, seven countries officially recognized Kosovo as an independent state. Immediately after the declaration of independence, the Kosovar institutions sent official notices and requests for recognition to all the governments of the countries of the world. The recognition of independence in the first days after the declaration aroused great popular enthusiasm and also encouraged the governments of reluctant countries to proceed with the recognition of the newest state. The institutions and the Kosovar public were looking forward to the new and upcoming recognitions pouring in those days, very crucial for the legitimization of the act of independence.
The day after independence is also characterized by good news because 7 member states of the United Nations officially recognized Kosovo as an independent and sovereign state. The countries that sent the news of the official recognition of Kosovo on February 18, 2007, are Afghanistan, Costa Rica, Albania, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and Turkey. It must be said that achieving international recognition is a complicated political process and not easily achievable. Therefore, the first days, together with joy and celebration, brought thrill as to who would decide to take the long-awaited decision to recognize the newly established Republic of Kosovo as a sovereign and independent state.
Each recognition made an extremely large echo in domestic politics and in the international media as important news for the cementing of the new geopolitical landscape in the Balkans. It is important that after this wave of recognitions, new recognitions followed because every day more and more countries of the world were convinced that the now-independent Kosovo was an indisputable, irreversible reality that would contribute to regional and European peace.
