Premiere of “The Hill Where Lionesses Roar” by the French-Albanian Director, Luàna Bajrami

On this day in 2021, the accomplished Kosova-born French actress, Luàna Bajrami, took a remarkable step behind the camera, presenting a vibrant tale of female emancipation at the Directors’ Fortnight during the Cannes Film Festival. The world premiere of her debut feature film, “The Hill Where Lionesses Roar” (original title: Luaneshat e kodrës), set in Kosova, was enthusiastically celebrated by Cannes audiences.

The film unfolds in a small, isolated village, echoing the director’s own upbringing, where young women grapple with stifled dreams and ambitions within the confines of a patriarchal society. Luàna Bajrami introduces us to a trio of young girls, brilliantly portrayed by Era Balaj, Flaka Latifi, and Uratë Shabani, who confront boredom and societal constraints. Throughout the narrative, the director skillfully transforms these initially bored girls into resilient individuals fighting for their rights.

Financed in Kosova, this captivating film delves into the intricacies of human emotion, offering a profound exploration of a world simultaneously brutal and captivating. Set against a picturesque yet unforgiving landscape, the characters navigate intense dilemmas, and the director masterfully weaves a narrative where themes of femininity, inner strength, and the struggle for emancipation are artfully interwoven.

Premiering at Cannes 2021, “The Hill Where Lionesses Roar” earned acclaim for its courageous storytelling and striking performances. By traversing complex emotional territories, the film sparked discussions on pertinent societal issues, leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary cinematic landscape.

Luàna Bajrami’s directorial debut in “The Hill Where Lionesses Roar” stands as a testament to her creative potential and artistic sensibility. This remarkable contribution not only adds luster to the Kosova film industry but also foretells a promising future for this young and talented director.
