Kosova deploys troops for first international peacekeeping mission

On this day in 2021 the small country of Kosova made history by sending its first-ever military platoon to Kuwait to take part in an international peacekeeping mission. This marks a significant milestone for Kosova, which only recently transitioned its security forces into a full-fledged army. The decision to send troops abroad was made following a request from the US Central Command, and the platoon will be under the command of the National Guard of Iowa for a six-month tour. The move has been met with positive reactions from both the government and the public.

Acting President Vjosa Osmani stated that it is extremely important for Kosova to not only import peacekeeping troops, but also to export them. This is a significant step for the country, which is still recovering from the aftermath of a brutal war that took place in the late 1990s.

The deployment of troops abroad is a sign of Kosova’s growing military capability and its willingness to contribute to preserving global peace and security. Further, it is an indication of the strong relationship between the two nations of Kosova and the US (which has heavily supported the young country’s military development). Participating in a peacekeeping mission abroad is a testament to Kosova’s willingness to embrace responsibilities beyond its borders and contribute to regional and global security, while also strengthening its ability to protect the country and improve cooperation with the US army.
