On this day in 2016, Dua Lipa was included on BBC’s “Sound of 2016” list. This list identifies up-and-coming artists every year based on votes given by 144 DJs and pundits. Featured on this list are artists the BBC feels should be taken notice of, as they believe they are going to be enormously successful in the future. At this time, this was only the beginning of Dua Lipa’s career, and the BBC predictions were more than true. Dua Lipa is now internationally recognized for her signature disco style and has received numerous accolades, including six Brit Awards, three Grammy Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, two Guinness World Records, and more.
Through Dua Lipa’s many achievements and engagements, she has become a role model for many girls and women across the world as a forthright and conscientious activist. Throughout her career and with every success, she makes sure to actively raise awareness for Kosova on the global stage. As the founder of the international music festival Sunny Hill in 2018, hosted in Prishtina every year, she uses the festival and the Sunny Hill Foundation to advocate for important causes in Kosova and promote the vibrant music culture in the region.
As part of her work, she focused on shedding light on the visa liberalization issue, which as of January 1, 2024, has come to fruition. and now allows Kosovar citizens visa-free travel within Europe. In 2022, the theme of the Sunny Hill Festival was #SetMeFree. This theme underscored the restrictions on the freedom of travel faced by the citizens of Kosova at the time. These restrictions particularly affected the youth, who constitute the majority of the population. Her efforts have been recognized, and Dua Lipa was made an honorary ambassador of Kosova in 2022.
