On this day in 2009, a transformative event unfolded in the cultural history of Kosova – the inaugural PriFilm Fest in Pristina. Graced by international celebrities, such as the renowned British actress Vanessa Redgrave, and adorned with the allure of red carpets, the event aimed to solidify Kosova’s brand on the global stage.
Vanessa Redgrave, serving as the president of the jury, garnered significant media attention, becoming the first global movie star to preside over a film festival in Kosova. Her presence underscored the prestige of the PriFilm Fest, aligning it with prominent international film festivals.
Beyond the glamour, the primary objective of the PriFilm Fest was to reshape Kosova’s international image. The iconic image of the red carpet beneath the Golden Goddess statues – the official festival prize – symbolized this transformation.
The festival’s late director, Vjosa Berisha, emphasized the need for such events in Kosova to shift the global media narrative away from politics. “Pristina and Kosova welcome the cultures of the world, and this is very important for the brand of a new country,” Berisha said. Films from the Balkans, Germany, the UK, and Afghanistan were among those featured in the competition, reflecting this welcoming spirit.
PriFilm Fest has since emerged as one of the largest and most significant film industry events in Kosova. It was born out of a necessity to revive and rebuild the cinema culture lost due to years of repression and war. The festival provides a valuable platform for young Kosovar filmmakers, often constrained by visa regulations, to network with industry experts from Europe and the region, enhancing their opportunities for international collaborations. PriFilm Fest is more than a film festival – it’s a celebration of Kosova’s resurgent film culture and an essential beacon for its global recognition.
