On this day in 2021, Vjosa Osmani was inaugurated as the President of Kosova, marking her position as the nation’s second female president, succeeding Atifete Jahjaga.
Leading the Lista Guxo political party, President Osmani campaigned in the 2021 General Elections alongside the Lëvizja Vetëvendosje! (Self-Determination Movement), securing over 300,000 votes and becoming the candidate with the highest number of votes. Her political career is distinguished by five terms in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosova, during which she led the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Committees. In 2020, she broke new ground as the first woman to hold the role of Speaker of the Republic of Kosova Assembly.
A key figure in Kosova’s path to independence, Osmani was the President’s representative on the Constitution Commission, tasked with drafting the Kosova constitution, and served as Chief of Staff and Senior Adviser on Legal Issues and International Relations between 2006 and 2010. She was also part of the team representing Kosova at the International Court of Justice, defending the legality of its Declaration of Independence.
Osmani’s educational journey began with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Prishtina’s Faculty of Law, followed by master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, USA. Her academic and professional achievements were recognized in 2017 when the University of Pittsburgh awarded her the Sheth International Young Alumni Achievement Award for her contributions to democracy and human rights in Kosova.
