On this day in 2007, Down Syndrome Kosova was established as a non-profit organization by parents of children with Down Syndrome. The organization covers all 7 regions of Kosova and provides specialized help to all those who have Down Syndrome. After a continuous rise in cases of children born with Down Syndrome in Kosova in the early 2000s, it was seen as necessary to create an organization that centers around these children and their parents- the organization being the only one of its kind in the country.
The mission of Down Syndrome Kosova is the protection and respect of human rights of those with Down Syndrome in Kosova as they are faced with negative stereotypes and social marginalization. The organization envisions equal opportunity and the empowerment of people with Down Syndrome so they are able to become productive members of society, as anyone else. This is done through the recognition of their human rights and dignity as people, the launching of awareness campaigns, providing specialized care that caters to their needs, as well as training for parents, teachers, and healthcare workers.
As a result of unfair treatment and marginalization, many people with Down Syndrome are unable to fully integrate into society, complete quality education or find employment. Therefore, the organization also provides education and job training to facilitate this process. An example is the opening of Cafe X21, a cafe in Prishtina that employs young people with Down Syndrome alongside a production facility next to the cafe where members of the Down community produce honey and create handicrafts. Projects and initiatives like this are dotted across the country and show improvements in the lives of people with Down Syndrome in Kosova.
