Kosova’s Constitution entered into force

On this day in 2008, the Constitution of the Republic of Kosova came into force, marking a historic moment in the establishment of the country’s sovereignty and independence. The journey towards this constitutional milestone began in March 2007, even before Kosova officially declared its independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008. Despite the UN not approving the Ahtisaari plan, the Kosova Assembly approved the new constitution in April 2008. The document officially took effect on June 15, 2008.

The backdrop to this constitutional development traces back to the Kosova War in 1998-1999, which led to NATO intervention and subsequently placed Kosova under the administration of the United Nations. The declaration of independence on February 17, 2008, set the stage for a series of transformative events.

The constitution, adopted on April 9, 2008, and promulgated on June 15, 2008, was a pivotal step in formalizing the establishment of the Republic of Kosova as a sovereign and independent state. This date, June 15, 2008, holds immense significance as it solidified Kosova’s status as a distinct entity separate from Serbia.

June 15, 2008, represents not only the legal and constitutional foundation of the Republic of Kosova but also signifies a moment of resilience and determination for the people of Kosova. The adoption of the constitution stands as a testament to their aspirations for self-determination and the pursuit of a sovereign future.
