On this day in January 2021, the Super League champions, KF Drita, played the winners of the Kosova Cup, Prishtina FC, in the Super Cup competition. For the first time in its history, the Supercup tie was played in Antalya, Turkey at the Mardan stadium. FC Prishtina were mostly in control of the tie, barring a mistake by the goalkeeper in the 8th minute to concede a goal to the Gjilan based side, KF Drita. The final result was a convincing 3-1 result for the side from the capital, winning the trophy for the first time since 2016 and for the tenth time overall.
Nonetheless, this being the tenth title for Prishtina FC is not the only reason for this game’s significance. With the game being played abroad for the first time in its history, it was a momentous occasion for Kosovar football in a subtle way. This night at the Mardan stadium has far reaching consequences beyond just the fans of Prishtina FC and their team’s success on the night. It shows the first signs of the Kosovar football scene into a regional market, engaging viewers from beyond Kosova’s borders to view the beautiful game as it is played in Kosova.
The Kosovar Football league obtained its first taste of globalising into the international football market, increasing its legitimacy as a football league.
