On this day in 2008, the centuries-old efforts of Kosova for freedom and independence were crowned with the declaration of Kosova as a sovereign and democratic state. Independence Day was celebrated with unprecedented popular enthusiasm, marking one of the most significant historical events for the entire Albanian people. Now recognized by 117 countries worldwide and maintaining diplomatic relations with many of them, the Republic of Kosova is also a member of many important international organizations and aspires to join the EU and NATO.
